David Woodmansee is both an athlete and scholar who spends his weeks in the lab and his weekends bicycling between France, Germany, and Switzerland, where he currently resides in the town of Basel. Growing up surfing and spearfishing in the waters of San Diego, David Woodmansee has always enjoyed spending time in the ocean. While studying as an undergraduate at San Diego State University (SDSU), David Woodmansee found another passion—organic chemistry. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with an Emphasis in Biochemistry, David Woodmansee stayed on at SDSU to earn his Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry. Today, David Woodmansee is a full-time doctoral student at Universität Basel in Switzerland and has focused his Ph.D. research on synthetic chemistry, in particular building new tools and methods for research in the field. David Woodmansee’s impressive resume includes 11 journal articles published in distinguished science journals, 6 patents with his name on them, and 5 years of experience working in the pharmaceutical industry at world-renowned research centers, such as the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation in San Diego. David Woodmansee feels most at home outdoors and enjoys hiking and rock climbing. To maintain his fitness level and provide healing relief from sports injuries, David Woodmansee began practicing Ashtanga Yoga, an activity he continues to this day.
